News: Congress led UPA neglects NE states: Smriti Irani

Imphal, September 04: Congress had enabled to win the faith of people of Manipur but it has failed to win the confidence of the people, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Mahila Morcha chief Smriti Irani, who arrived here on a two day visit, said today.
Addressing the Mahila Workers’ Meet at the BJP state unit office, at Nityapat Chuthek, the actress turned politician who recently has taken over the charge of the women’s wing of the party said that Manipuris who fought with the then mighty British empire had been reduced to the sideline by the Congress. The BJP condemned the attitude of the Congress.

News: NE militants shifting base to Myanmar

DIMAPUR, SEPT 3 (IANS): Terrorist outfits of northeast India have been trying to shift their base camps from Bangladesh to Myammar following a crackdown by the Bangladeshi Army and para-military, the Tripura police chief said here Friday.
‘Following the arrest and surrender of Bangladeshi trained militants in Tripura and getting inputs from various intelligence agencies, it was confirmed that the northeast militants are changing their base camps from Bangladesh to Myammar,’ Director General of Police Pranay Sahay told reporters.

News: ULFA threatens to pull out of peace process

GUWAHATI, SEP 3 (IANS): The outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) Friday threatened to pull out of the peace process in Assam accusing New Delhi of double standards by engaging security forces in harassing supporters engaged in brokering peace.
“It is better to pull out of the peace process if New Delhi continues with its aggressive policies without trying to create conducive atmosphere for furthering the process of negotiations,” jailed ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa told journalists. Rajkhowa said this while being brought to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital for a routine health check up.

News: 'Unauthorized' churches regularised in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, SEPT 2 (PTI): Seven churches, built on encroached government land in Meghalaya, have been regularized and the occupied land handed over to the local church committees in the wake of uproar from some quarters that the government was playing with religious sentiments. Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal today said instructions were given to the urban planning officials only to regularise the church buildings built on government land and to hand over the land to the respective church committees.

News: Mizoram to get UN help for HIV & AIDS

Aizawl, SepT 2 (IANS):The United Nations (UN) will support Mizoram in prevention of HIV/AIDS and in management of prisons in the northeastern state, an official said here Thursday.
Cristina Albertin, representative of the New Delhi-based United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime - Regional Office for South Asia (UNODC-ROSA), made the announcement while addressing a week-long training-cum-brain storming session which began Thursday.
The session, inaugurated by Mizoram Home Minister R. Lalzirliana, is aimed at improving skills of jailors, inmates and health workers to deal with HIV/AIDS patients, fellow inmates and vulnerable citizens. Albertin said complex issues such as anti-retroviral therapy (ART) treatment and counselling for HIV/AIDS patients should be focused upon, and the training will be beneficial to treat the inmates affected by the killer disease and be accepted in the normal society.

News: Air-lift hope for patients in NE

GUWAHATI, AUG 29 (AGENCIES): Medica Superspeciality Hospital of Calcutta is offering air evacuation services to patients from the Northeast. “Patients from this region are often unable to avail well-equipped services in times of emergency and hence there is a need for air evacuation services in this region,” the director of Medica Institute of Neurological Diseases, L.N. Tripathy, told.
The air evacuation services through Cessna SkyHawk (a four-seater) will be available to patients from the region at Rs 10,000 per hour. The aircraft has been taken on lease and can be deployed with prior intimation to pick up the patient and one relative.

News: Assam-Arunachal border clash: 5 injured;assam blames NSCN(I-M)for tension

GUWAHATI, AUG 29 (AGENCIES):Five Arunachali people were injured and a vehicle was damaged during a clash in the border area of Assam-Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday, police said. According to reports, five Arunachali people of Nishi tribes were injured during a clash with Assamese people, and a vehicle was also damaged in Santipur area under Sadia police station in Tinsukia district along Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in the morning.
‘’Five Nishi tribal people were going to Itanagar from lower Rowing area of Arunachal Pradesh in a vehicle and when they reached Santipur area, villagers blocked them and questioned about the killing of one Gongaram Patir’s daughter, who was married with a Nishi tribal youth of lower Rowing recently,’’ a police official said according to India Blooms News Service report.

Dimapur, August 27 (MExN): The government of Assam has land and border disputes with almost all the North Eastern states such as Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Mizoram and these issues reflect the fact that the tribal were driven away from their lands by Assam, a former senior Nagaland minister said. Since India became independent in 1947, in the name of insurgency or the undergrounds, the government of Assam has taken away lands belonging to the tribals Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Mizoram, former Congress leader TA Ngullie said in a statement today.

Tinsukia, August 26 2010: Even as more houses were torched in the Assam-Arunachal border last night, the pro-talks faction of ULFA and the villagers of the Charaipung demanded that they be authorised to intervene if the Assam Government is finding hard to take up measures so that normalcy returns in the area.

The pro-talks faction of ULFA and villagers have asked the Assam Government that they be given a 'free hand' to fend off the 'Naga militants' since the State Government is not doing enough.
