News: Diversion of funds for ST/SC to CWG
|
NEW DELHI, AUG 31 (IANS):Home Minister P. Chidambaram Tuesday admitted that Delhi government has violated guidelines in the diversion of plan funds for scheduled castes and tribes to finance projects for Commonwealth Games.
“In our view of the guidelines of 2006, these appear to be wrong,” Chidambaram said in Rajya Sabha, during a discussion on the alleged diversion of funds from scheduled castes and tribes for the Commonwealth Games. Earlier in the month, Rajya Sabha had witnessed disruptions by members of the Bahujan Samaj Party over the issue, which came to light through a Right to Information application.

News: NE girl molested; NESC demands justice
|
DIMAPUR, AUG 31 (NPN):North East Support Centre (NESC), New Delhi Tuesday condemned the Connaught Place Restrobar, “molestation” incident in New Delhi where one female, a resident of Manipur was allegedly molested by the manager.
NESC spokesperson, Madhu Chandra in a statement demanded the law enforcing authorities to act and punish the guilty. It is a panic spread across Delhi and NCR among Northeastern girls working in unorganized sectors, it stated.
According to sources, NESC said Ms. Archana (name changed) from Manipur was working at Restrobar at L Block Connaught Place, New Delhi for the past three months.

News: 59 new dengue cases in Delhi, tally 800
|
NEW DELHI, AUG 29 (IANS): Delhi Sunday reported 59 new cases of dengue, taking to 800 the number of people infected so far by the mosquito-borne disease, an official said. “No deaths were reported in the capital today (Sunday). The total number of dengue cases in capital now stands at 800 - 779 reported from Delhi and 21 among people who visited the capital from neighbouring states,” Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) chief medical officer N.K. Yadav said. Delhi so far has reported two dengue deaths. With the numbers rising every day, a worried Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Thursday said that monitoring of the dengue status would be done on a daily basis and fogging would be intensified at Games venues.

News: 5 killed by Maoists in Chhattisgarh
|
RAIPUR, AUG 29 (IANS): Five security personnel were killed as over 100 Maoists ambushed a patrol in Chhattisgarh’s restive Bastar region Sunday, leading to a gunfight, police said. “Maoists ambushed a police patrolling party drawn from the Border Security Force (BSF), district force (DF) and special police officers (SPOs) in a thickly-forested area,” Inspector General of Police (Bastar range) T.J. Longkumer told IANS over phone from Jagdalpur, headquarters of Bastar region.
He said the gun battle took place in Bhuski village in Kanker district, 250 km from capital Raipur, when Maoists ambushed the troopers. “It was a major ambush but our jawans fought bravely and fiercely...Maoists were in large numbers and estimated to be over 100,” Longkumer said.

Gurgaon, August 28 (AGENCIES): Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi unveiled the Commonwealth Games 2010 theme song in the inaugural ‘Swagatham’ ceremony here on Saturday. The theme song, ‘Oh yaaro, yeh India bula liya’, which has been composed by Oscar winning music director AR Rahman, voiced the nation’s enthusiasm for the upcoming event.
The hour-long launch function also saw some enthralling dance performance by ‘Sadya’ group followed by another Gypsy group dance show by the artists from Shiamak Davar Institute of Performing Arts. After the song was unveiled, Rahman said that he could not decide on the song till the very last moment. “I feel honoured to get the opportunity to compose the theme song for the mega-event. It was not an easy task. I had started composing it six months ago and finished just last night,” Rahman said.

DIMAPUR, Aug 26 (NPN):A Naga girl who paid Rs 40 lakhs for Post Graduate study was duped after she was refused admission to the institute as promised by an “agent”.
According to the FIR , the victim had applied for MDS (Ortho) course at ITS, CDSR, Ghaziabad through one Delhi-based agent identified as Rajan Verma. He claimed to be an agent of the institute and promised the girl admission under the management quota.

News: Manmohan Singh expresses concern over Naga-Metei 'divide' in North-East
|
New Delhi, Aug 26 (ANI): Prime Minster Dr. Manmohan Singh on Thursday said that the situation in the North East is better today than it was in the recent past, but some areas of concern still remain, like the Naga-Metei divide in Manipur.
Addressing the second-day session of the 45th conference of Director Generals Of Police and other senior security officials here, Dr. Singh said: "In Manipur, for example, the Naga-Metei divide had accentuated. The unfortunate growth of identity-based assertiveness in the North East, particularly in Manipur and the North Cachar Hills, needs well thought-out and sensitive handling."

News: Why not hold the Games in Manipur, asks Aiyar

NEW DELHI [PTI] Aug 25, 2010,: Keeping up his campaign against organisation of Commonwealth Games, senior Congress MP Mani Shankar Aiyar on Wednesday questioned the rationale of Delhi hosting the event and said it would have been a "very good answer" to insurgents if it would have been held in Manipur.
Speaking to a group of Delhi University students at Press Club, Aiyar wondered why such mega events come back to Delhi again and again. Even if it is organised here, he asked, why localities in the outskirts like Bawana are ignored.

News: NSCN/GPRN clarifies press statement

DIMAPUR, AUG 18 (EMN): Following the recent skirmish that took place between the Assam Police and the Wangcho Nagas in Arunachal Pradesh, the NSCN/GPRN has clarified that no Naga Army personnel was involved in the incident,as against the news published in some local dailies of Assam.
Col. Levi Zimik, PRO/IPR, General Headquarters, Naga Army has stated on being implicated, an enquiry committee was set up to probe into the incident which established the fact that the incident was a mere case of encroachment.

News: India confident in Security Council bid
|
NEW DELHI, AUG 16 (IANS): India is not only set to be elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2011-12 in October but is confident of garnering at least 150 votes in the General Assembly that could fast-track its bid for a permanent seat as well, according to well-placed diplomatic sources.
The 192-member UN General Assembly will decide on candidates for non-permanent seats in October. If all goes well for New Delhi, India will be in the Security Council for a two-year term as a non-permanent member from Jan 1, 2011, the first time in 19 years it will get the prized seat.
